- Berenice Abbott came east in 1918, where the avant-garde circles in New York’s East Village introduced her to art. In 1921 she moved to Paris, and her talents as a photographer emerged. Moreover, she championed Eugène Atget, a photographer known for his haunting images of the city, and purchased his collection after his death in 1928. Atget’s influence can be seen on Abbott’s chronicling “the spirit of the metropolis” upon her return to New York City in 1929. In 1939 Abbott published her work in an important volume, Changing New York.
