Artist
Nathan Oliveira, born Oakland, CA 1928-died Palo Alto, CA 2010

The figure in Man with a Hat, Cane and Glove stands frontally, the formality of his posture and clothing humanized by his crooked tie, a charming imperfection in his otherwise dapper appearance. In describing his process of completing a painting, Oliveira said, “When I reach that point where the painting comes alive, then I step away. It reaches out and starts touching people; it’s up to them to deal with it.”
