THE FUTURE IS FEMALE: To Future Women, a four-day gallery experience held at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, asked visitors to write a letter to women in 20 years' time, expressing hopes and fears for a future generation. Women and girls of all ages--as well as many men-- participated in the event, during which letters were displayed and shared in-gallery. One 10-year-old participant from Miami, Fla., wrote, "I hope your country has equal rights and by now a woman has been president." Halcyon Arts Lab Fellow Georgia Saxelby created the interactive artwork to mark the one-year anniversary of the 2017 Women's March and provide historical context for the protest. The Hirshhorn will digitize and archive each of the submitted letters and re-exhibit them in 2037 on the 20th anniversary of the march.
