¡De última hora!: Latinas Report Breaking News showcases the work of seven Latinas on Spanish-language television, their eyewitness reporting on major stories, spanning Vietnam, September 11, and immigration, their commitment to the communities they report on and for, and advocacy journalism. With stories and objects from journalists Ilia Calderon, Dunia Elvir, Marilys Llanos, Gilda Miros, Lori Montenegro, Maria Elena Salinas, and Blanca Rosa Vilchez, the exhibition examines the common challenges they face: working motherhood, speaking “neutral” Spanish, and particular standards of beauty. Working in the fast-paced, ever-changing environment of broadcast news, these women shaped and shape the narrative for major historical events while collaborating with their local and national Latina/o communities to provide news coverage that meets their needs.
