Biographical / Historical
Associated Publishers was the publishing arm of the National Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, later the National Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Founded by Carter Godwin Woodson in 1922 it is oldest African American publishing company in the United States (taken from LOC authority heading).

When the Museum purchased the collection from the Estate of Robert S. Scurlock, it obtained all rights, including copyright. The earliest photographs in the collection are in the public domain because their term of copyright has expired. The Archives Center will control copyright and the use of the collection for reproduction purposes, which will be handled in accordance with its standard reproduction policy guidelines. Archives Center cost-recovery and use fees may apply when requesting reproductions.

Scope and Contents
Group of young men and women in school uniform, standing in an office. A woman and one of the young men are both holding a piece of paper, possibly a check. There are framed portraits on the wall behind them. No ink on negative. Ink on envelope: caption and "7 glossy ea". "KODAK - SAFETY -- FILM" edge imprint. Retouching on faces and hands with New Coccine.
Subseries Restrictions
Collection is open for research. Gloves must be worn when handling unprotected photographs and negatives. Special arrangements required to view negatives due to cold storage. Using negatives requires a three hour waiting period. Contact the Archives Center at 202-633-3270.
